Alien Movies in Order: Release vs Chronological
The Alien saga spans nearly five decades and reads very differently depending on whether you follow release order or the in-universe timeline. Both are legitimate; they just tell the story from opposite directions.
Release order
- Alien (1979) — Ridley Scott's haunted-house-in-space masterpiece.
- Aliens (1986) — James Cameron's action sequel; the series' other undisputed classic.
- Alien 3 (1992) — David Fincher's bleak debut — divisive, but better than its reputation.
- Alien Resurrection (1997)
- Prometheus (2012) — A prequel about origins, set decades before Alien.
- Alien: Covenant (2017) — Bridges Prometheus toward the original.
- Alien: Romulus (2024) — A standalone set between Alien and Aliens.
Chronological order
By in-universe date: Prometheus → Covenant → Alien → Romulus → Aliens → Alien 3 → Resurrection. This order tells the creature's origin first, but it front-loads the saga's weakest mysteries and spoils the slow reveal that makes the 1979 film work. It's an interesting rewatch, not a first watch.
Recommendation
Watch Alien and Aliens first — they're the essential pair and a complete experience on their own. Continue with 3 and Resurrection if you want the full Ripley arc, then take Prometheus and Covenant as a separate origin duology, and Romulus whenever. The Alien vs. Predator crossovers are best treated as non-canon fun and skipped on a first pass. Availability is fragmented — the older films and the newer ones frequently sit on different services — so check each film on this site for your country.
